Architecture Workshop

Architecture photography is difficult because of converging lines, and the fact that the sky can often be blown out. It is helpful if you can take the photo at sunrise or sunset so the building is lit romantically to create an "emotion". To correct verticals you can either use a large format camera, a tilt shift lens or photoshop transform tool. You can HDR an image to get the sky and facade detail all in the same image. It is important to frame to building well and use lead in lines. It takes a bit of time to walk around the building and look at it from different angles to see how best to frame it.

What I Want to Learn

I would love to learn underwater photography specifically so that I can take pictures in the surf. I want to learn this because I love the ocean.

Chrome

This was a very challenging workshop. I got a lot out of it, and I think I will get very frustrated when it comes to doing the real thing.

Schleimpflug Principle

When you have a large format camera with the film plane and lens lined up together you will have a selected depth of field, however if you shift the film plane a smidgen you can make the whole image come into focus. This is known as the schliempflug principle. It is amazing. It is useful when photographing a wall when you want everything in focus.

We also learnt how to correct converging lines in photoshop. This can be done in camera by shifting the film plane up and down, or photoshop can do it for you by lens correcting and transforming, however the issue here is that you can lose image quality because you will be making something from nothing.

chupachupas

The best flavour of chupachup is cola because it is a flavour sensation in your mouth, the mixture of brown and white creates an amazing tingly reaction that would be fantastic if you could capture it in a bottle forever.

Why Film?

I would use film over digital if i wanted amazing detail. While my digital camera gives good detail, it is still not as good as using medium format film.

Large Format

Large format was interesting to play around with. Takes a lot of time to set up, and although we didn't get to use film, you could definately see the advantages of it with so much more detail on the back of the glass, and the ability to change the dof is amazing. We couldnt get the convergence thing happening but with practice and the right lens on i'm sure it will happen.

best attribute to be a successful business person

The best attribute a photographer needs to be a successful business person is reliabilty. They need to be relied upon to capture whatever the client is asking of them at the time, and to be relied upon to have a quick turn around so that the client isn't waiting weeks for their work.

Monoblocs, speedlights, etc

On friday we messed around with the monoblocs and sppedlights to create differentlighting effects. I found the monoblocs really easy to set up and control, easier than the studio flashes for some reason. Even easier than the monoblocs, were the speedlights. They are small and convenient, although they don't emit enough power required for studio work, they are really handy to use on location. We had trouble getting rear curtain sync to work on the 40D but after a but a bit of googling ifound that it won't work with a speedlight attatched.
